Life with Lily Book Review (with Giveaway)

I just read the cutest book and now I'm going to share it with you. Life with Lily is the story of Lily Lapp, a small Amish girl.  We follow Lily as she gets a new baby brother, her aunt gets cancer, she gets new animals on her farm, and even gets two new teachers. Lily is absolutely adorable, and it is great to see Amish life through her eyes. She tries really really hard to be a good girl, even when bigger girls try to get her in trouble. She loves her little brothers, even though she wasn't sure what to think when the ugliest baby she'd ever seen came home. The book follows her from the ages 5 - 7, but it is not a children's book. I'd say that an advanced fifth grader could read it. I think that smaller children would love the story as a read aloud though. There is an entire interactive website called The Adventures of Lily Lapp that they can play games and learn more about Lily from.

I've read maybe five Amish books, and this one was a little different. Besides the fact that it had a child as the main character, there were a few other differences. There were some things that happened that I've never seen in an Amish book. When someone gets sick, they go to an actual doctor. Lily's mother puts her lunch into a plastic container for school. At school, Lily is taught about evolution (not by her teachers, but it is mentioned). All of these were a little out of the norm for me. I don't know if this was intentional or not. Read for yourself to see if you think this is a good portrayal of Amish life. This is only book 1 of what will be an entire series.

  1. So glad you enjoyed the book. It is based on my own childhood of growing up in an Amish family. And yes we used plastic containers, doctors, and the evolution incident was when an "english" man tried to introduce it to the school children. That did not go down well with the parents!

    Blessings~

    1. That must have been an amazing upbringing. I had no idea about the plastic and doctors. Every Amish book I've read seems to have portrayed them as against modern medicine. Thank you for this wonderful series, I can't wait to read the next!
