Literary Blog Hop!

Literary Blog Hop

So, I'm not quite sure if I've got this blog hop figured out. So other participants, correct if I'm wrong. I believe the dealio is that this blog goes on all the time, but there is just one question a month, and you have to answer it in the first 4 days of the month.... And the books have to have some literary merit.

Well here goes, assuming that I am correct.

This month's question is as follows :

What work of literature would you recommend to someone who doesn't like literature?

This is a tough one. I recommended that my husband read Gone with the Wind and that didn't turn out so well. He recommended that I read The Paladin and Dune, and that hasn't worked out yet either. So I might not be the best bet to recommend books. Too bad I have a book blog, mwahahahaha.

Ok, but seriously. This is a tough one. I love The Great Gatsby and I think it is an easy one to understand. It's short so it won't frustrate you and I think it'd be a good introduction to "literature". You could also start with a "children's" book like Peter Pan or Treasure Island. Those sort of adventures can lead you to more and more books. They're also not so simplistic that you'll feel like an idiot for reading them. I think Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the first "literary" books I read and I was hooked. After that I read Treasure Island and The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, et al.

So those are my recommendations! Thanks for stop by!

  1. You did it right. I am reading "gone with the wind" right now and it's taking me forever. I thought I'd breeze through it quickly but nope. I'm liking it so far though but I think maybe the length overwhelmed your husband? The Great Gatsby is a good choice. Hard to admit but I've never read Peter Pan or Treasure Island. I should though! I think YA books are more accessible as literature for those who shy away from well written books.

  2. Too funny! A book blogger who can't recommend books! :) I think Peter Pan is an excellent suggestion, though. It's an exciting adventure read for kids, but it's got plenty of adult themes. I mean, psychologists named an entire syndrome after it, for heaven's sake!

  4. Ha! When my husband and I were still dating, we made a deal: I'd read his favorite book (LoTR Trilogy) if he'd read my favorite (Gone with the Wind). Guess who read ALL THREE Lord of the Rings books? And guess who quit after about 100 pages of Gone with the Wind?
And it's a damn shame, because Gone with the Wind is incredible! But I'm sorta glad to know I'm not the only one with an uncooperative husband. :)

  5. Luckily I had already read and loved LOTR or else Craig would've made me read those too. He now wants me to read Dune even though he too gave up on Gone with the Wind. I just don't understand. It's a historical epic with a love story thrown in. What isn't there to love?!

  6. I completely agree with you regarding the children's book. I suggested Anne of Green Gables as my more younger suggestion. I'm also new to this blog hop and I didn't realise the bit about answering the question in the first few days. My answer is very late if that's the case. Also new follower. :)
